The eighth edition of Chandigarh Lit Fest, Literati 2020, opens on Friday in its virtual avatar with noted author, intellectual, speaker, and former CEO of Procter & Gamble, Gurcharan Das, featured in the opening plenary session.

Dr Sumita Misra, chairperson of Chandigarh Literary Society (CLS) said that this time again the three-days weekend Literati shall feature some of the noted authors from India and abroad, and it is a matter of great pleasure that Literati is being organised in association with HAREDA, and the Embassy of Ireland as partner with Radio Mirchi 98.3 as Happiness Partner, she added. 

Some of the other prominent authors participating in Literati include Sudha Murthy, Rajdeep Sardesai, Ashish Vidyyarthi, Chitra Banerjee Divakaruni, Dr. Rakhshanda Jalil, Radhakrishnan Pillai, Anuja Chauhan, Dr. Janki Santoke, Amandeep Sandhu, Sarabpreet Singh, Anuja Chandramouli, Erner Davis amongst others..

The Chandigarh literary society is back with its eighth edition of Literati: Chandigarh International Lit Fest 2020 in association with HAREDA. This time it features some of the most prolific authors of national and international arena including Sudha Murthy, Chitra Banerjee Divakaruni, Gurucharan Das, Anuja Chauhan, Rajdeep Sardesai, Dr. Rakhshanda Jalil, Sarabpreet Singh, Anuja Chandramouli, Dr Janki Santoke, Navtej Sarna, Emer Davis and many more.

There are over 30 authors from English, Hindi and Panjabi genre  participating in the three days event which would go live on facebook and youtube on 20th November from 5:30pm to 9pm, informed author and speaker Vivek Atray.

 CLS had been organizing the Chandigarh Lit Fest for the last eight years and this year immediately after lockdown in end March, it launched CLS Conversation online featuring some of the celebrated writers like Amish Tripathi, Ashwin Sanghi, Bilal Siddiqi, Sanil Sachar, Dr Farah Adam Mukadam, Mukul Kumar, Rajni Sekhri Sibal, Meghna Pant, Khushwant Singh, among others.

Punjab Governor flags off Rotary's gift of Diwali sweets for Army Jawans












Four tons of sweets sent by Rotarians of District 3080 fifth year in a row.  

Chandigarh, November 9:  In no way we can compare the sacrifice of our jawans guarding our borders, said Governor of Punjab and Administrator UT Chandigarh, Shri V P Singh Badnore, as he flagged off three army trucks containing Diwali sweets. 

We in Punjab, being a border state, have one or the other relation serving in the defence services and this is commendable that Rotarians continue to remember them year after year, he said. 

He commended the Rotarians for their continued gesture of sending sweets and greetings on Diwali to jawans serving in the harsh conditions on our borders. 

The project which was initiated in the year 2016 by Rotary Club of Chandigarh at the instance of Mrs Usha Saboo wife of the former world president of Rotary International Rajendra K Saboo, has now participation from Rotarians of other Rotary clubs in the District 3080 which comprises besides Chandigarh, parts of Punjab, Haryana, Himachal Pradesh, UP, and Utrakhand. 

The programme continues to be spearheaded by the past district governor Rtn Kawal Bedi wife of an ex Indian Army Officer, who manages the entire logistics assisted by the past president of the club Neenu Vij and her husband Praveen Vij who takes care of the airlifting of the consignment through the Indian Air Force.

The current District Governor of Rotary District 3080 Ramesh Bajaj said that this is a humble gesture from Rotarians to acknowledge the great sacrifices that our jawans make.  

Club President Sukhjeet Singh Gill said that Rotarians are grateful to the IAF and all the Rotarians from District for keeping this project going. 

The consignment of 4000 kg of mithai worth over Rs.20 lakh would be airlifted by the Indian Air Force to be delivered in the border areas of North East, China border, Kupwara, Pithoragarh areas, of Siachin, Leh.and Ladakh, informed PDG Madhukar Malhotra. 

Past President Charanjit Singh, Inner Wheel President Komal Gupta amongst others were present on the occasion.

Safety Guidelines for Events Industry released by Punjab Minister for Sports & Youth Affairs

The Events and Entertainment Management Association (EEMA), a national apex body of events and experiential the marketing industry, released a comprehensive Standard Operating Procedures (SOPs) here today at Hotel JW Marriott Chandigarh. 


 


Punjab's Minister for Sports and Youth Affairs, Rana Gurmit Singh Sodhi, formally released the EEMA's SOPs for the events and entertainment industry and hoped that despite the challenges of COVID19, industry and trade must restore their operations while maintaining health safety.  He commended EEMA for compiling the SOPs for the industry which shall be highly useful for everyone.

 

He said that he shall also be requesting the Punjab Chief Minister to increase the numbers for social and corporate gatherings.

 

Ankur Kalra, a founder member of EEMA,  appreciated the Government's decision to open up the event industry allowing the gathering of a maximum of 100 people for social, religious, cultural, and corporate events in most parts of the country under Unlock 4.0.

 

The  SOPs are for the event organisers and other stakeholders including hotels to ensure complete safety of the guests, which in fact can be used by any organization, informed Vijay Arora.

 

Earlier, the local representatives of EEMA presented a copy of the 300-page document to Punjab's Health Minister Balbir Singh Sidhu, who hoped that events conducted under strict supervision as per the health guidelines shall ensure the safety of organisers and the guests.

 

Ankur Kalra said that the availability of SOPs to the industry shall help ease the operations and open up the economy, instil confidence amongst the organisers as well as the public, giving a fillip to this Rs.5 lakh crore industry that employs over 10 million people, who were worse affected during the lockdown.

 

In a statement released from Delhi, Roshan Abbas, President, EEMA said, "EEMA is in conversation with local administrative bodies to see if rules can be further relaxed post the 21st given that they are working with extensive safety protocols."   He also added, "Though we had approached the Govt. to open events with a ceiling of 200 people, but we welcome the Government's decision and look forward to conducting events with all necessary precautions."


Punjab Chapter Chairman of PHD Chamber of Commerce and Industry Karan Girhotra hoped that this move to open up the event industry shall definitely help the economy in the region. 


Ankur Kalra, the founder member of EEMA  from Delhi conducted the 'Safe Events' Workshop enabling industry stakeholders to get more information and details towards better event planning conforming to international health safety procedures under Covid19.

 

A simulated corporate event titled "India is an Event: We're ready for Safe Events" was also held in the evening for invited guests, event organisers and other industry leaders and government representatives to experience its efficacy.  

 

EEMA envisages this event to build more confidence in the local Govt. stakeholders and surely fuel their thoughts to increase the limited to a more sustainable one in term of management and at the same time commercial viability for organizers to revive and re-surge again.

 

Marriott Bonvoy partnered with EEMA as the Hospitality partner by providing venues for this multicity event and ensured all protocols were being followed as per EEMA's safety guidelines.   

 

One of the region's biggest wedding planner, Tony Singh, hoped that the same zeal and zest that Punjabis represent during their social and wedding events, would return to herald the prosperity in this region.

 

Another well-known name in corporate events and advertising field Shaleen Kapoor said that the return of the business gathering would help businesses of all sizes to the network again and revive their closed enterprises through collaboration in this region.

 

Hardeep Singh, another leader in the trade fairs domain felt that there is a greater need to have more and more exhibitions where businesses and trade can find opportunities to grow.   

 

The evening saw many prominent government and industry representatives participating, where strict compliance of COVID health norms as per EEMA's SOPs were followed including checking of 'Aarogya Setu' app, wearing of masks, maintaining physical distance, etc, with adequate signage and digital messaging, were put on display for the guidance of the guests.

 

The entire hotel staff delegated for the event had also been certified and verified by EEMA's experts who were also initially trained, besides the usage of food-grade sanitizers and disinfectants.

Best Club Trophy to Rotary Chandigarh Midtown

Rotary Club of Chandigarh Midtown won the Best Club Trophy in the Rotary District 3080 for the year 2019-20, with Rtn Salil Bali declared as the Best President in the Rotary District.

At the District Awards function held at Kurukshetra in the presence of a few club presidents and secretaries of last year with live streaming online, the awards were given to various clubs in the District for the service projects undertaken during the last Rotary year which ended on 30th June under the leadership of District Governor 2019=20 Rtn Jitendra Dhingra.

Rotary Club of Chandigarh received the Awards for maximum projects during 2019-20, best project for medical mission to Zimbabwe, and best contribution to the Rotary Foundation during the year, which were presented to last year president Rtn Surinder Pal Kaur.

Rotary Chandigarh Shivalik received the best club award in its category for its 'Dinner in the Dark' project.

The last Rotary year's president Rtn Salil Bali of Chandigarh Midtown who attended the function and received the Best Club Trophy from the District functionaries for organizing 26 AIDS awareness camps.

Another District Trophy for its Best Project on TB awareness was also won by Chandigarh Midtown, besides its member Assistant Governor Deepak Sood adjudged as the best club trainer.

Salil Bali said that the club could do wonder because of the active participation of everyone of its 113 members despite the lockdown since March.

   Congratulating the award winners, Past Rotary International President Rajendra K Saboo through online video conference said that Rotary is a continuous process and with each passing year, it grows stronger and through the leadership opportunity that it gives to various Rotarians it not only makes them heroes for that year, but better human beings for the rest of their lives.

Over 150 Rotarians attended online, including various senior Rotarians, current District Governor Ramesh Bajaj, and past district governors including Kawal Bedi, Arun Sharma, Shaju Peter, Ranbir Singh, Manmohan Singh, Satish Saluja, Parmod Vij MLA, Yoginder Dewan, Ranbir Singh, Col Patnaik, TK Ruby, Jitendra Dhingra, and incoming leadership of the District Ajay Madan, and Naveen Gulati, amongst others.

Rotary Honours Justice Rajiv Sharma by conferring Paul Harris Fellowship

 

Chandigarh, 8th July:

Rotary Club of Chandigarh installed its new President Rtn Sukhjit Singh Gill and Team for 2020-21 here yesterday through a virtual meeting in the presence of various dignitaries and prominent Rotarians from District 3080.

Rtn Sukhjit Singh Gill, who is a financial consultant took the collar of presidentship from his predecessor Rtn Surinder Pal Kaur, an ex-IRS officer.

Mr Justice Rajiv Sharma  of Punjab and Haryan High Court was the Chief Guest and District Governor Ramesh Bajaj was the Guest of Honour.

Outgoing president Surinder Pal Kaur informed that the club has spent nearly Rs.1.8 crores including Rs.55 lakh during the Covid on providing medical supplies to PGI, GMCH32 and General Hospital Sector 16, besides extensively providing dry ration and prepared food to the doctors, migrant labour.

The club was able to undertake 16 children for heart surgeries under club's Heartline project, besides various initiatives in the village Saketri, and throughout the lockdown the Club continued to meet regularly. 

On this occasion, Mr Justice Rajiv Sharma was conferred the Paul Harris Fellowship for his contribution to the environment,  by the Club contributing USD1000 to the Rotary Foundation.

Speaking on the occasion the chief guest who himself is a great environmentalist and known as 'green judge', Justice Rajiv Sharma said that everyone should be concerned and caring about our environment beyond our own homes.  He said global warming and other environmental destruction would lead to crisis for our earth and humanity.

He advised we must start living in harmony with nature, and respect environment and lamented the growing disharmony being caused by our dependency on technology especially the mobile phones. 

Rtn Sukhjit Gill shared the roadmap for the club during 2020-21 and said that the club shall continue to impact lives through blood donation camps, promote the flagship project with free heart surgeries through its partner hospitals, sensitise school children in menstrual hygiene and sanitation, launch of health education centre for the children of the city, and health of women and children.

Rotary Vidya Sadan in Bapu Dham shall be strengthened further to educate drop-out girls, and provide crèche facility for the daily wagers, and clubfoot treatment to children in GMCH32.

District Governor Ramesh Bajaj, guest of honour, stated that despite the continued lockdown the Club shall continue to reach out to the community come what may. Sharing success mantra with the new team, Ramesh Bajaj asked to follow 'BMW' i.e. prayer, Bless My Wisdom, Bless My Work,  Bless My Words, and Burn My Worries.  He advised the leadership to put up three factories for success, one, of Ice factory to stay cool; sugar factory to speak sweetly; and the third, love factory to instill compassion and love in your heart.

Earlier former world president of Rotary International, Rajendra K Saboo said that the leadership in Rotary changes on 1st July congratulated outgoing president Surinder Pal Kaur for her stellar achievements during challenging times and complimented the incoming team for their plans.

Assisting President Sukhjit Singh Gill in the team 2020-21 are Vice President Praveen Agarwal,  Secretary Gurvinder Saggu; Baldev Garg, Treasurer; Sonia Dhillon, Jt Secy; Dinesh Dua director club service, Vinod Kapoor, Director Vocational Service; Lalita Grover, Director Community Service; Gurmeet Chawla; Director International Service; Baldev Aggarwal Director Youth Service; Kulbir Dogra, Sergeant-at-Arms; PRID Rajendra Saboo, PDG Kawal Bedi, PDG Madhukar Malhotra, PDG Praveen Chander Goyal.

 Those who joined the meeting included past district governors Ranjit Bhatia, Madhukar Malhotra,   Yoginder Dewan, Manmohan Singh, Praveen Goyal,  Jitendra Dhingra,  district governor elect Ajay Madan, Usha Saboo, Inner Wheel President Komal Gupta, and Rotaractors amongst others with Rtn Dinesh Dua and Rtn Suditi Jindal moderating the session.

Past President Neena Singh recited the mool mantra of Japji while Rtn Ruchi Singla recited the Gayatri Mantra as invocations at the beginning of the meeting.

The Club was chartered on 13 May 1958 and has since grown with the city launching various projects for the community.
